 Philosophy/Design

Almost all human endeavours have a philosophy at their base, be it stated or otherwise. Gardening, and/or sustainable living, is little different.

Underpinning TSH, and each of the gardens/homes I have visited, is an underlying philosophy or design that guides each step, and helps the creator make some kind of sense of the myriad of information that abounds in each case. The philosophy might be clearly stated, like permaculture or biodynamics, or it might be more ephemeral. It may be overarching and/or unitary, like sustainable home design, or it could be very specific, such as no-dig gardening techniques. In any event these philosophies lie at the heart of what we are doing, and it is these philosophies (not the individual expressions) that are transferrable to different situations.

This section of the TSH website is designed to help us understand some of the varied philosophies... the web that holds everything else together.

Note: If you have an affilation for a particular philosophy/technique, and it isn't mentioned below, then feel free to submit an article to TSH for inclusion. If you'd like to comment on any of the articles, then please use the link to the forums provided on each article so we can all share in each other’s knowledge.
